Crazy Mac OS X Update

That’s crazy. 356MB of software update for the Mac OS X. It’s like a Windows Service Pack every 2 months or so. Also, you don’t have the option to restart later. It’s either restart or shutdown. Great user experience, yeah!

Much of that update package is made of complete application replacements whereas Windows Update only replaces small bits and pieces.

Consider this. If you updated an application, you would have to download a new installation package whether in Windows or Mac OS X.

It is the same thing here. Front Row Update, iTunes, and Java are complete replacements although the size of the Mac OS X Update is questionable. But there could be a number of applications or frameworks included, all bundled under the same name Mac OS X Update.

You say you can’t restart later, but you can choose install and then choose to hide the software updater app until you want to. Either way it still updates on shutdown, so the same timeframe of actual installation is used in both instances.
