My Buying Process: Buy a TV
Here is my whole buying process of a new TV set:
1. Wondering for weeks/months if I need a new TV (there are already a 32″ CRT and a 20″ LCD TV)
2. Enquire with friends who already have HDTV
3. Enquire online about my requirements: not too big (32″ or 37″); for a room; HDTV cable provider; PVR or not
4. Check online reviews about the brand to buy: Samsung, Sony, Sharp, LG
5. Check deals regarding the brand and size that I want (32″ Sony Bravia LCD or similar): redflagdeals.com; futureshop.ca; bestbuy.ca
6. Wait for a deal, buy immediately or go to point 1.
I’ll see if I buy it this month or back to square 1.

The thing with buying technology products is that there is never a right time to buy since they evolve so rapidly. I think your buying strategy is right. Give yourself a timeframe to find something that suits you; if that timeframe elapses without you finding anything, reconsider all options from the beginning, as the options have certainly changed.
I note that you are not considering a Philips. Interestingly, in the TV market, the big brands are not always the best. Of course, it is undeniable that Sony remains a serious contender in any competition to do with entertainment, but you would be surprised how the lesser known brands rate amongst reviewers. Philips, for example, was the editor’s choice in the 32″ TV category in a recent T3 review.
As for me, except for the limited connections on my Philips 26″ HDTV, I am quite happy with the image. Even for non-HD sources, it performs well thanks to the upscaling technology built in.
