Chinese Gold Farmers — a new virtual economy with real cash

You may not heard of this new type of business: gold farming in China! When there is a need, there is a business opportunity. It did not take long to see a new economy building taking ground. A farmer is someone that earns something of value in MMORPG (massive multiplayer onlive role-playing games) like World of Warcrafts. The farmer collects weapons, tools and points in the game and then resell them on eBay for a small fee. Instead of going in a real farm, they play online for hours. They normally use some proxies in the US/Canada for connecting to the MMORPG servers which makes them difficult to be identified as (Chinese) farmers.

There will be always some lazy people who want to acquire points easily and skip some levels in the game. Labour is cheap in China. Hence, a new booming virtual economy with real cash. It shows that with some basic skills, you can play for a living, but in China.

    Haha, here’s one link: http://www.playnoevil.com/serendipity/index.php?/archives/978-Chinese-Student-earns-1.29-Million-in-RMT-Gets-Arrested.html

I think I saw one where a Chinese guy sold a rare ‘weapon’ or something else that is used on some RPG game, and this resulted in another Chinese being so angry he tracked down the first guy and harmed him. I can’t trace it on Google, but I am sure I saw it on the Chinese net news before.
